03 / BOOK & WORKSHOP

The Houdini Doctrine

Stories of escape, survival and performance under pressure

The book

What helps someone keep looking for a way forward when their options seem to be closing in? In The Houdini Doctrine, Jeff Lancaster explores stories of escape and survival to consider how people respond under pressure. These stories invite us to look more closely at the possibilities we notice, the preparations we make and the decisions that help us move when we feel stuck.

The workshop

The accompanying workshop brings these questions into the challenges faced by teams and leaders. Through guided discussion and practical reflection, participants explore what is keeping them stuck, where opportunities may be going unnoticed and what they can do next. The focus is on finding a useful way forward in the circumstances they actually face.

NEW RELEASE · COMING IN 2027

The Umbrella Effect

How small human acts shape performance, culture and who we become

Sometimes a small act of care stays with us long after a competition ends. The Umbrella Effect explores how the ways we notice, support and make room for one another can shape our experience of performance, our sense of belonging and the people we become.

Through human stories, the book invites coaches, leaders and teammates to consider the influence they have in ordinary moments — and the difference an act of kindness can make, even when it changes nothing on the scoreboard.

THE MOMENT THAT STARTED IT

It began with an umbrella.

Around 18 months before this announcement, Jeff Lancaster shared a LinkedIn post about the athletes pictured here and the simple human gesture between them. The post went viral, reaching nearly 400,000 impressions and attracting more than 2,500 social engagements.

That response became the starting point for The Umbrella Effect: an exploration of why small human acts matter, what they make possible for others and how their influence can extend beyond the moment itself.

04 / ABOUT THE LAB

One connected
body of work.

The Human Performance Lab geometric monogram and stacked wordmark on glass, with the line Inform. Influence. Inspire.

The Human Performance Lab brings together mental performance coaching, team culture and adaptive leadership.

Our brands offer distinct ways into that work. Changefully starts with the individual. Teamfully explores the culture between people. Natural Selection looks to nature for lessons in how people and systems can adapt and thrive.

Across all three, the purpose is the same: to turn understanding into something you can practise.
